Shy monitor lizards were the first visitors, Captain James Cook the second. Since then actors, politicians and royalty have all chosen Lizard Island, the most northerly resort in Australia, to escape the pressures of modern life and get back to nature. And it's nature in all its unspoilt glory - 2,500 acres of wooded grasslands, a beautiful lagoon and 24 white sand beaches!
Apart from a few other select guests, your neighbours will be the island's own creatures. Birdwatchers will delight in the many species of bird found here and you may well come across the occasional monitor lizard, after which the island was named. Rest assured, however, they will be more frightened of you!
Accommodation at Lizard consists of spacious rooms nestled among palm-studded gardens. They are well appointed with air-conditioning, ceiling fans, minibars and verandas with ocean views. The social hub of the island is the main lodge, which houses the reception area, lounge, and 'Osprey's Restaurant & Bar'. Here guests congregate to enjoy the choicest foods harvested from the ocean or brought in from the mainland, together offering tantalising, international cuisine to temp each and every palate.
There's little doubt that Lizard's proximity to famous Cod Hole on the outer Barrier Reef is its main underwater attraction. Spectacular marine life, including the 6 foot feet long potato cod fish, awaits your inspection. Closer to home, the island's surrounding spectacular coral reefs are just a leisurely snorkel from the beach, where you'll encounter countless tropical fish and the great 70-year old giant clams. Other activities include water-skiing, windsurfing, tennis, glass-bottom boat rides, swimming in the freshwater pool and secluded picnics on nearby uninhabited islands. Since Captain Cook first landed in 1770, nothing much has changed here…if you desire complete freedom, secluded beached and endless tropical delights, Lizard Island would be the perfect choice.
